The
Pigs
With 225 acres of land under our management animals are becoming an
important component of the farm. For now we are only raising
pastured raised pigs but we hope to move to a more diversified animal
operation in the future.
Our pigs are mixed breeds of Tamworth, Hampshire, Duroc, Yorkshire, and
Berkshire. All of the pigs raised on the farm are kept on
pasture. Three sows are rotated through a 2-acre pasture.
During the winter they are kept in the greenhouse on a thick bed of
straw. They are bred in November and have their piglets in
March. The sows produce about 30 piglets each spring. Once
it is warm enough the sows and their piglets roam in the pasture.
At eight weeks the piglets are weaned. Some are sold to
neighboring organic farms. We keep about 12-15 piglets to raise
as feeder pigs. After weaning the piglets are moved to “Pig
Paradise” a three-acre area of woods and pasture. It is a pig’s
nature to dig for roots and grubs so the wooded land is a perfect spot
for them.
The pigs are also fed culled vegetables from the farm fields and
washing barn. Their diets are supplemented with mixture of
soybeans, corn, molasses, and vitamins and minerals. The grain is
not organic but does not contain any antibiotics or
hormones.
In the fall members can purchase a 10 lbs pork share of assorted cuts
including bacon, sausage, ham, pork chops, ribs, and roasts. Look
for ordering information in the newsletters.
